I'm a little on the unusual side, but you knew that. Didn't you?

Ardbeg, hmm: "the most peaty malt whisky in the world", says their site. If it's more so than Laphroaig, I'll probably have to give it a pass. (Of the Islay single malts, I prefer the mid-range ones -- Caol Ila and Bowmore.)

Much more peaty than Laphroaig. It's seriously heavy, smoky and peaty. Ardbeg and Lagavulin are my favorite single malts. Oban is probably third.

I actually got to introduce Steven to Ardbeg when he was here. Wow did he like it.

Hrm. Yes, I like Bowmore quite a lot, too -- their "Legend" is probably the uttermost bargain in the Scotch world. Their older bottlings are even better...

Caol Ila I have never heard of, let alone tried. http://www.islaywhiskysociety.com/caol_ila/ says: "Caol Ila is considered to be one of the lighter of the Islays. Medium-bodied with a rounded flavour. Pale in colour with a greenish tinge. This malt has a peaty nose, with distinct floral notes. It is described as tasting slighty of seaweed/iodine, lightly medicinal, smoky, salty, sweet with a dry peppery finish." That about right?

Seaweed/iodine? Dunno about that, but otherwise, sure. Worth a try.

I like Oban, too.
