I think a selection can have merit in one dimenision, but be a token in another dimension. Her selection appeals on merit to the NRA, Evangelicals and pro-life supporters because her positions align with those of those groups. Her selection seems to be tokenism when the idea is that she should appeal to disaffected female supporters of Hilary Clinton irrespective of policy positions, but rather because of her gender.
